Surgical Technology

Surgical Technicians in operating roomThe Surgical Technology program will prepare students for careers as surgical technicians, which are in high demand by area hospitals and surgical centers. The average salary for a surgical technician is up to $35/hour. After completing one year of study, students can take the certification exam. Please note that TS-C does not meet licensing or regulatory requirements for Surgical Technologists in some states. Please check with your local hospital system of your residence to confirm participation with this certifying body.


Introduction to Surgical Technology

Aug. 31 - Nov. 20 | Online coursework plus on-site job shadowing and in-person interviews | Tuition for this class is $180; fees are $170.

This course presents students with an introduction to the field of Surgical Technology. Topics include the history of the surgical technologist, professional organizations related to the profession, medical terminology, professional, legal, ethical, and moral responsibilities of the surgical technologist, health care organizations, environmental safety in the surgical field, and the importance of teamwork in the operating room setting. This course also introduces students to the terminology used in the profession. Students will also experience a full day in the life of a surgical technologist. Upon completion, students should be able to apply theoretical knowledge of the course topics to the operative environment.

There are no prerequisites for this course. Any student interested in Surgical Tech can take this course!

  • Basic Life Support
  • CastleBranch drug screening
  • CastleBranch Bridges Program
  • 1 set of scrubs

Pre-requisites for Enrollment

Students will need to have completed these courses in order to enroll in the program:

  • ENG 111 (or equivalent)
  • ENG 112 (or equivalent)
  • MAT 143 or higher (or equivalent)
  • BIO 163 or combination of BIO 165/166 (or equivalent)
  • College level humanities or sociology or psychology course
  • Exhibit computer literacy or completion of college-level computer course

  • Group A Clinical/Class: Sept. 7 - Dec. 18 & Jan. 11 - March 26 | Tuesday class from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. | Robinette Building, rm. 213, Rockingham | Clinicals Monday & Wednesday from 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Group B Clinical/Class: Sept. 7 - Dec. 18 & Jan. 11 - March 26 | Tuesday class from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. | Robinette Building, rm. 213, Rockingham | Clinicals Thursday & Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
